Nell knits . . . a lot.

She knits blankets for new babies, socks and hats and mittens for the children's home, and scarves for everyone in her family.
What Nell doesn't do is talk a lot . . . not until a small, unexpected moment in the limelight changes her life.
Nell is a character as warm and comforting as a hand-knit sweater, through whom the joys of knitting and generosity shine.

Nobody is really surprised when Nell wins first prize for her sweater, ...

Reviews

Association of Booksellers for Children:  2006 BEST BOOKS FOR CHILDREN !

School Library Journal:  ... the illustrations are soft and bright.. though smiles abound, they reflect the protagonist's quietness.  A good addition where there is a demand for books about shyness.

Kirkus Reviews:  ... Nell's unusual tenacity and generous way of coping with a bully add enlightenment to an all-too-common occurrence in children's lives everywhere.

Booklist:  Roth zeroes in on common kid traits such a shyness and a propensity to help others and wraps the knitting around them ...  illustrated with spunk and charm.

Spirituality and Practice:  ... salutes the spiritual .. Nell knits at the park so she can listen to the trees.

Vogue Knitting:  ... meet Nell, the irresistibly shy heroine ...

:: NEWS! :: THE KNITTING NELL PLAY

Minneapolis Kids (citywide after school program) received a grant to produce and perform the Knitting Nell play.  The cast (ages 7 - 12) toured several schools in early 2009 to much applause.
Teachers and students alike responded to the bullying/forgiveness theme.
